SWTB-SBDC Annual Report 2008

What we do
From helping existing business owners grow and deal with operational challenges to assisting aspiring entrepreneurs turn ideas into businesses, SBDC professional business consulting and training services provide up-to-date, practical information. SBDC training classes provide the opportunity for business owners to learn solid management solutions in a classroom environment or 24/7 online.

How we do it
The SBDC is funded in partnership with the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA), The University of Texas at San Antonio (UTSA), as well as universities and colleges throughout South and West Texas. Strategically located throughout our 79-county service delivery area are ten (10) SBDCs which provide business counseling, training, and research services. Confidential business consulting services are free of charge to SBDC clients.

Specialized assistance in international trade, government procurement, technology commercialization, human resource management, taxes and workplace safety is also available via our Specialty Centers. We also assist rural economically distressed communities by providing economic and business development assistance, strategic planning support, applied research, and support to promote economic and business growth in the 79-county region.

Where We Work
The South-West Texas Border SBDC Network covers 79 counties containing 108,802 square miles (41% of the State) with a population of 6.9 million and 135,633 small businesses. The Network extends from the U.S./Mexico border economies of El Paso, Alpine, Eagle Pass and Laredo, down the Rio Grande Valley to Edinburg, Harlingen and Brownsville, to the Plains economy of San Angelo and through the Central Corridor of Austin and San Antonio, to the Gulf Coast economies of Victoria, Corpus Christi, and Kingsville.

The 25,667 counseling and training clients of the SWTXB SBDC served in FY’08 represents 19% of the 135,633 employer businesses in the service area.
